If there were a call for the community to look through the archives of travel slides and documents, what would we find? Where did we go and what did we see? The whole of the world is already represented in slides found in my studio, at least figuratively. Comparing the ideas of travel and the transformation of landscape--through various sites--may offer many different cultural perspectives of travel.
Often social constructs of our destinations dictate what we expect from our travels. In her essay, "Too Much: Grand Canyon(s)", Lucy Lippard reminds us of the idea of owning the landscape by subjecting it to the representation. The plane of the photographic image can offer more than is immediately evident. The film grain can capture details revealing our aspirations, histories, and the unexpected. In this sense, various sites frequented by tourists offer rich potential for cultural interrogation in our collaborative project. It will reveal the histories of specific locations, subjected through our collective inquiries.
